ISHARES CUP COWES : CARNAGE HALL !...

A bit a disaster for the first day of the Ishares Cup event at Skandia Cowes week as the 11 fleet experienced 3 capsizes and a major collision involving the current leader (at that times) Franck Cammas.

Puffy wind and traditional Solent chop sent successively Team Acqua, Team Origin and BMW Oracle (Jimmy Spithill) overboard, only Team origin succeding to come back to a normal position with the help of its powerfull chase boat without too much damage. The two other ones lost their rig in the process when they hit the bottom once upside down.

For Franck Cammas, it was a classical top mark traffic jam with the fleet split in two coming at each other at full speed. Franck was in the group coming from port, and too many boats being at the same time in the same place, he cannot avoid his leeward positionned fellow BT and exploded his bow spit plus the forward beam in the collision.

Too bad for him as he was enjoying a 1-1-2 so far.

It must be said that the courses set by the event organizers are very very very small, way too much in my mind, and with 11 boats arriving full speed at the top mark wich is not even followed by a dog leg, this type of situation seems quite inevitable.

More to come ?....
